The Italian Football League was started by English emigrants in the 1890s with the first ever club being Genoa Cricket and Athletic Club. Until 1897, there were separate leagues for foreigners and Italians. Currently, the Italian League consists of Serie A (20 teams), Serie B (22 teams), Serie C1/A and C1/B (2 groups of 18 teams each), Serie C2/A, C2/B and C2/C (3 groups of 18 teams each) & Serie D (9 groups of 18 teams each). Serie A is the name of the highest football league in Italy. The teams participate in a championship often referred to as the Scudetto (small shield) because the winning team will bear a small coat of arms with the Italian colours on their uniform during the following season. The most successful league club is Juventus with 27 championships, followed by AC Milan (17), Inter Milan (13) and Genoa (9).
